Just a five minute walk down the Damrak from Centraal Station takes you into this Dam square, jostling with locals and tourists day and night. It was created in the 13th century when a dam was built around the river Amstel to prevent the Zuiderzee sea from swarming the city. 

Dam Square is a heart of Amsterdam. Because of that there are many shops in Dam Square. In Dam Square, there are three most famous department store in the Netherlands "Bijenkorf", "Magna Plaza" and "Maison de Bonneterie". So, I am sure you Will not get bored in Dam Square even though if you are there whole day. There are also some nice souvenir shops in Dam Square, so if you are a tourist, you should visit those souvenir shops and get some present for your family or friends.
